Utilizing Ortho-K for Myopia Treatment
Myopia or nearsightedness is one the most common vision issues affecting Americans today. While the cause of myopia is unknown, some of the common symptoms associated with this condition include:
- Difficulty seeing distant objects
- Difficulty reading signs
- Squinting
- Eye strain
- Headaches
- Eye fatigue
- and More
What Causes Myopia?
Myopia appears when the eyeball is too long, causing light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina instead of directly on the surface. This condition can also be caused by an abnormal curve in the cornea or lens. Myopia usually presents in childhood and often continues to progress as you age.
What Are the Risks Associated with Myopia?
While some cases of nearsightedness can clear up as patients age into adolescence, some may see an increased risk for other more serious vision and eye health conditions if their myopia is left untreated. Myopia can create an increased risk of glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and blindness. In fact, myopia is currently the 2nd leading cause of blindness.
Myopia Treatment Options
There are 3 main ways that myopia can be treated by your eye doctor here at Pelham Parkway Vision Center. Depending on the severity of your condition and your lifestyle needs, our optometry team may suggest using eye drops, soft bifocal contacts or Ortho-K lenses.
Are You a Good Candidate for Ortho-K Lenses?
Worn at night while you sleep, Ortho-K lenses work to gradually improve your vision and treat your myopia. Children ages 8 to 12 who have progressive myopia, most adolescents and adults are all typically good candidates for orthokeratology treatment. These special GP lenses are safe that children, athletes and anyone who may have a fear of more invasive treatment options. Ortho-K is also great for those who have a prescription that will continue to change and athletes who cannot wear eyeglasses or contacts.
However, this treatment option is usually recommended for treating low to mild nearsightedness and astigmatism. Patients with more advanced vision issues including dry eye syndrome, enlarged pupils or high myopia may benefit from other vision correction treatments offered by our optometrists in Bronx, NY.
