Glaucoma Treatment From Our Bronx Eye Doctor

At Pelham Parkway Vision Center, our Bronx eye doctor provides diagnosis, treatment, and management for any number of eye conditions and diseases. One of the more common eye diseases we see in our office is that of glaucoma, which is often referred to as the “silent thief” of vision. If diagnosed and treated early enough, however, it is possible to protect your vision from permanent damage and to keep this disease under control indefinitely.

Understanding Glaucoma and Its Symptoms

Specifically, glaucoma refers to a condition where excessive pressure is placed on the optic nerve in one or both eyes. This pressure prevents signals from reaching the brain, which can gradually cause your eyesight to deteriorate. If left untreated, glaucoma can eventually lead to permanent vision loss and blindness. For this reason, it is important to understand the common symptoms of glaucoma, which include:

  • blurry vision
  • distorted vision
  • sudden vision loss
  • eye pain

Unfortunately, glaucoma doesn’t always have obvious symptoms until it’s too late. This is why regular eye exams and screenings for glaucoma are highly recommended.

It is also worth noting that while glaucoma is most common in adults aged 60 and older, it can occur to anybody at any time. Still, those with pre-existing eye conditions or those with a family history of glaucoma will be at a greater risk of developing it at some point in their lives. This is why regular screenings as part of your annual eye and vision exams are so highly recommended.

Glaucoma Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosing glaucoma requires a pressure reading to be taken of each eye. In our office, we also have tests that can physically examine the optic nerves, such as Pachymetry, visual field, and GDx examinations.

If we determine that you are suffering from glaucoma, there are treatment options available based on the severity and extent of the disease. We will always take the time to carefully evaluate your specific condition before making a customized glaucoma treatment recommendation. For some patients, glaucoma can be successfully treated and managed with the use of medicated eye drops that are designed to relieve eye pressure.

However, for more severe cases of glaucoma, laser treatment or a surgical procedure may be needed to reduce pressure on the optic nerve and protect you from further vision damage. At Pelham Parkway Vision Center we work with the most knowledgeable glaucoma specialist whom we refer the patients if such procedures are needed and would benefit our patients.
