Bronx NY Hard to Fit Contact Lens Exams: Astigmatism, Keratoconus, Dry Eyes & More
If you have been diagnosed with astigmatism, you may need to wear a special type of contact lens known as “toric lenses”. Toric lenses are a special type of soft contact lenses that has different vision powers in different meridians. With normal spherical contacts, the same vision power is consistent throughout. These contacts are good at correcting vision problems due to nearsightedness or farsightedness, but less effective for astigmatism. Since custom toric lenses have different vision powers, these lenses are effective for astigmatism. Our Bronx optometrist has significant experience fitting these specialized contact lenses for patients with astigmatism.

Keratoconus is one of the most common eye conditions requiring hard to fit contacts. This progressive eye disease occurs when a normally round cornea begins to bulge in shape, causing progressive nearsightedness and irregular astigmatism to develop. As the cornea becomes increasingly irregular, it can be very painful to wear traditional contact lenses, which rest on the cornea. Depending on the stage of your keratoconus, you may be a good candidate for one or more specialized contact lenses.

Scleral lenses are a specialized type of contacts that rest gently on the sclera, the white part of the eye, rather than resting on the cornea. In addition to providing a more stable fit, since these lenses do not place additional pressure on the cornea, they are generally more comfortable to wear. Scleral lenses are best for more serious cases of keratoconus. For mild to moderate cases of keratoconus, you may be a good candidate for rigid gas permeable contacts, also known as GP or RGP. These lenses are made from an oxygen-permeable material that maintain their eye shape and do not conform to the underlying cornea. By eliminating blur, the lenses also provide shaper vision that glasses.

In addition to astigmatism and keratoconus, our Bronx eye care professionals are experienced fitting lenses for dry eyes, giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), and presbyopia.
