Get Ready For School with a Back to School Eye Exam

Children’s eyes are constantly changing as much as the rest of their bodies and this is why it’s important for children to receive regular eye exams, especially for the new school year. Eye exams keep track of vision changes and detect any developing eye diseases in your child’s eyes that can make it difficult for your child to see in the classroom.

Eye Exams with Our Optometrist in New York
Vision is an important part of learning that making sure a child can see to learn may make the difference in their long-term academic success. Common eye diseases that can develop as early as the age of six years old are myopia, farsightedness, and nearsightedness. To prevent from common eye diseases to develop in your child or to receive corrective eyeglasses, an eye exam right before school begins makes sure that myopia or other vision problems haven’t developed over the summer.

Pediatric Eye Exams
Many parents are concerned that an eye exam will be difficult for their children because they don’t yet know their letters or cannot read. Special eye exam charts and techniques are used for pediatric eye exams so that children can properly communicate in order to complete vision exams.

Pediatric eye charts use Lea symbols, which are a system using small pictures. Doctors use a light in order to test the children’s eye muscles and field of vision for a proper range of motion and the use of pictures inside of their instruments test vision focus. They can also get a lot of information about a child’s vision by examining the reflection in the back of the child’s eyes. These special techniques make it so that parents don’t have to worry about the quality of an eye exam.
